Bread Header

I have to tell you I am reluctant to have this discussion. In the four years I’ve worked to develop Plan Z, the Diet By Zola, I have never brought up the subject of bread and baked goods. I felt like if I ignored the subject it would not come up. Instead, I spent a… [Continue Reading]

Back Pain Header

As a little teeny girl I have a very vague recollection of a specialized bed that was set up in our den.  It had these strange contraptions hanging off the end of it. I also remember stories of Big Marie.  Big Marie was a woman who was helping my mother to raise us little tykes… [Continue Reading]

I powered through Obsessed: America’s Food Obsession on My Own in an afternoon. Here’s the problem: Mika offers the same advice that the government, nutritionists, doctors and personal trainers have been telling us for the last 30 years.

Eggs

The argument is that eating egg yolks will raise your cholesterol, which in time would clog your arteries and give you a heart attack. That’s the same bad advice my father got. The research is showing it’s the inflammation from consuming too many carbohydrates that will set you up for clogged arteries. Eat the eggs. Skip the ‘sandwich’ in the breakfast sandwich.

Olive Oil Header

“Eat less fat” has been the mantra of the U.S. government for the past 30 years. But while Americans have dutifully reduced the percentage of daily calories from saturated fat since the ‘70s, the obesity rate has more than doubled, diabetes has tripled, and heart disease is still the country’s biggest killer. I got sucked… [Continue Reading]

Jet Lag header

I am one of those people who suffers from altitude sickness. So what does that mean? It means that I am part of the 15% (or so) of the population that is mildly to severely affected by altitude.  This takes effect several ways.  For example, if I try to go skiing in Colorado, within about… [Continue Reading]
